CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2010 ON MAUI

Black History Month will be celebrated throughout February 2010 with a series of events  presented by two nonprofit organizations, African Americans on Maui Association and Arts Education for Children Group. Events will include free presentations, a fashion show, musical performances, the release of a newly published book, an awards ceremony, and an historical exhibit.

Black History Month events will continue on Sunday, February 21, at Borders Books & Music in the Maui Marketplace. Adams will read from her new book and sign copies for purchasers. Also on that day, Gloria Purter of the African Heritage Culture Center of Kauai will be one of the speakers.

The public is invited to attend a free dinner dance on Friday, February 26 from 5-9pm at the Kahului Community Center. Organizers are asking attendees to bring a sample of their own cultural ethnic dish or drink. For more information, email yo77art@yahoo.com.

The month-long celebration will end at Borders Books & Music in Kahului on Sunday, February 28 with a poetry reading by Ayin Adams and African drumming and dancing by Drums of Passion starting at noon.

April 11: A Day of Culture and Art by Maui Cultural Diversity Days Celebration

In celebration of Maui’s unique multicultural community, festivities showcase an array of traditional music and dance, arts and crafts, costumes and demonstrations by various groups representing Maui’s diverse ethnic mix.The day’s fun also includes foods and crafts for purchase and on-stage performances headlined by singer Hulu Lindsey. 2010 Young Artists Showcase winner of The Maui County Sister Cities Foundation contest will be announced during the festivities.

Cultural Diversity Days Celebration presents “A Day of Culture and Art” on Sunday, April 11, at Maui Community College from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free.

Maui Invitational Music Festival 

Symphonic Band Workshop and Performance

The Maui Community Band holds a symphonic band workshop for woodwind, brass, and percussion players of all ages and of intermediate to advanced levels.  Original works composed for the Festival are featured in a program performed by the Band at Lahaina’s July 4th celebration and in a concert at Queen Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center on Thursday, July 1. Join us for ongoing rehearsals, every Thursday, 7 - 9 PM.
Age levels: Intermediate to advanced players of all ages

May 22 - Free Classical Music Concert

The 2010 Maui Invitational Music Festival presents a free classical music concert on Saturday, May 22 from 5:30-7:30pm at the Baldwin Home, Front Street in Lahaina. Chamber music will be performed by the Maui Brass Ensemble, Maui Cello Quartet, and Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (MYPO)’s violin trio.

Admission to the open-air May 22 concert is free. There is paid parking behind the Baldwin Home (enter from Dickenson Street) andproceeds go toward the preservation and continued maintenance of all Lahaina's historic sites.

2010 MAUI INVITATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL WORKSHOP SERIES

June 14 –25, 9am Making A Band
Calling all youth who already play an instrument and want to join a band of their peers. Participant’s audition and are grouped with a band. Each band is provided with a place to rehearse and the opportunity to be recorded. Instruction and coaching provided by United Globe Music Inc.
Age level for participants: Intermediate players 9
Location of program: Kihei Charter School and Maui Wave Studios
Cost of program: $125 includes instruction/coaching and rehearsal space; partial scholarships available

June 14 – 25 - Session 1 begins at 10 am
Guitar / Bass / Percussion
Group Lessons

Students receive group instruction on bass, guitar and percussion. Classes are organized by instrument and further separated by skill level including beginning, intermediate and advanced. Focus is on correct playing techniques, scales, chords, soloing ideas and playing within a band context. Students also have opportunities to play with professional musicians at jam sessions and public performances. All classes taught by trained instructors of United Globe Music.
Age level for participants: Beginner to advanced players 9 - 18
Location of program: Maui Wave Studio and Kihei Charter School
Cost of program: $15 per 1- hour class

June 14 – 25, 10am - 2pm
Introduction to Entertainment Technician
This course exposes students to the fundamentals of audio engineering, lighting design, stagecraft, stage management, audio recording and audio engineering techniques. Session culminate with a field trip to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center for back of house tour and hands-on workshops. Audio students will record groups in the program at Maui Wave Recording Studio Instruction offered by Peter Lago of Maui Wave Studios.
Age level for participants: 12 – 18

June 28 – July 17
Introduction to Musical Instruments
This course is designed to ascertain where the musicality of each child lies. Via our mobile music school, we provide a variety of instruments (musical instrument petting zoo), to allow students hands on experimentation. Students are given the opportunity to try different instruments in order to find which one is of interest to them. We will focus on the three elements of the music making process including rhythm, melody and the silences / pauses in music. Instruction by United Globe Music.
Age level for participants: Beginning players 9 – 12
