A Celebration of Maui's Multicultural Community

Cultural Diversity Days Celebration presents “A Day of Culture and Art” on Sunday, April 11, at University of Hawai‘i Maui College (formerly Maui Community College) from 10am to 5pm.  In celebration of Maui’s unique multicultural community,  festivities showcase an array of traditional music and dance, arts and crafts, costumes and demonstrations by various groups representing Maui’s diverse ethnic mix. The day’s fun also includes foods and crafts for purchase and on-stage performances headlined by singer Hulu Lindsey.

Admission is free.

“The goal of this day is to bring together as many different cultural groups and art forms as possible in the same place on the same day to increase appreciation and understanding of each groups varying gifts,” says Marilynn Hirashima, chairperson, Maui County Commission on Culture and the Arts.

Awards are also part of the day’s festivities:  Winners of the art contests conducted by the  Maui County Sisters Cities Foundation and   MOA of Hawai‘i will be announced and all entries will be on display. And, the annual Masaru "Pundy" Yokouchi Award will be presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to culture and arts in Maui County.

“A Day of Culture and Art” at University of Hawai‘i Maui College (formerly Maui Community College) in Kahului on Sunday, April 11, is sponsored by Maui County Commission on Culture and the Arts, Arts Education for Children Group, Maui County Sister Cities Foundation, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, County Of Maui, and MOA Hawai‘i.

Arts & Crafts booths:

  • JB Creations  will sell handmade beaded jewelry, sea glass jewelry, and soy candles
  • Heart of Maui  will sell multicultural peace/world religion flag sets, minerals and crystasl
  •  A variety of books will be for sale by author Helen V. Garcia                      
  • Hawaii Ukulele & Gift Corp. will sell  made-in-Hawaii ukuleles and accessories as well as Asian antiques
  • Rosy’s Chop Suey Collection will offer a variety of  ethnic arts and crafts                       

Food booths:

  • Kiku No Kai MCC Japanese Club  will be offering yakitori (chicken skewered on sticks and grilled)            
  • Maui Portuguese Cultural Club  will sell jams, jellies, pickles, Portuguese Ice Tea, and stone oven bread made by its members. This bread is made in an outdoor, wood burning, stone oven that is domed-shaped and called a forno.
  • Maui Puerto Rican Association  will offer pasteles, gandule rice, and bacalao salad. Pasteles are a traditional Puerto Rican holiday dish made of savory meat and banana wrapped in pastry. Gandule rice is an exotic pork & rice dish with pigeon peas (gandule). Bacalao is a lettuce and tomato salad topped with salted codfish.
  • Maui Taiko  will sell  teriyaki mini bento. Bento is a Japanese boxed lunch that usually includes rice, fish or meat, and pickled vegetables
  • Portuguese Association of Maui  will sell Portuguese bean soup (a hearty meat and vegetable soup), malasadas (deep fried doughnuts), and Portuguese sausage hot dogs (spicy).
  • International House of Taro will  serve four dishes:
    1) A West African specialty - Taro dumplings: (fufu), in a palm sauce and inan okra (gombo) sauce.  Fufu is really pounded Taro roots after they have been boiled.
    2) A Japanese specialty - Taro shishkabob Skewered pealed taro filled with fruit jam roasted or grilled.
    3) Alubuay: This is taro, boiled to the point where it starts to melt into a puree, in a hot olive oil  seasoned with salt and a hint of hot pepper
    4) Taro home fries with bell peppers, onions tomatoes and garlic
  • St. John’s Youth Group will be selling softdrinks
