Jazz Maui presents
“East Meets West” Music Series
Throughout 2016, Jazz Maui will partner with the King Kekaulike Music program to produce an array of festivals designed to bring together music students, performers and instructors from Asia (Japan, Singapore, Thailand), the United States and Hawaii for a series of music workshops and concert performances. The education curriculum includes intensive music workshops focused on performing in ensembles and bands led by master instructors followed up with a series of community concerts around Maui.
The kick off series will feature trumpeter Eric Miyashiro from Tokyo, Japan. Born in Honolulu, Eric attended the prestigous Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is presently based in Japan where he is currently one of Tokyo’s most in demand and sought after freelance trumpet players. He has performed and recorded with many of the Jazz greats including the Buddy Rich Big Band, Count Basie Orchestra, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughn, Paul Anka, Stevie Wonder, Bill Conti, John Williams, Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, the Stylistics, Tower of Power and Anita O'Day.
Eric will be on Maui April 1-4 leading workshops and clinics culminating with a free concert with the NaAlii Big band at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Castle Theater on Monday April 4. The Jazz Concert will serve as the opening act of the King Kekaulike Spring Concert. Eric will be joined by the NaAlii Big band in a medly of classic numbers including Backrow Politics, Birdland and Someone to Watch Over Me.

Eric Miyashiro Bio
Jazz trumpet player Eric Miyashiro was born of Japanese parents in Honolulu on July 13, 1963. Eric's father was a professional trumpet player with the world-famous Royal Hawaiian Band and his mother was a professional dancer from Tokyo, Japan.
Beginning at age fourteen and through high school, Eric had the opportunity to play professionally with Sammy Davis, Jr., Engelbert Humperdinck, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Tom Jones and Henry Mancini. When Eric was eighteen years old, he won a position with the All-American High School All Stars and played with Maynard Ferguson and his big band at Carnegie Hall for the Jerry Lewis Telethon.

io work while studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and by 1989, at age twenty-four, Eric moved to Japan to pursue a freelance career working as a studio musician and clinician. Subsequently, Eric formed two bands, the EM Band and Z Force, both featuring top caliber Japanese musicians, and currently directs the Blue Note Tokyo All-Star Jazz Orchestra.
Eric's high register and style (reminiscent of Maynard Ferguson) are very sought after, particularly in Japan where he is currently one of Tokyo’s most in demand and sought after freelance trumpet players. Eric Miyashiro has played lead trumpet with the various, Maynard Ferguson Tribute Bands, CHASE Revisited, Woody Herman Thundering Herd, and the Buddy Rich Big Band, and has performed with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Count Basie Orchestra, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughn, Paul Anka, Stevie Wonder, Bill Conti, John Williams, Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, the Stylistics, Tower of Power and Anita O'Day.
Eric has also performed in the soundtracks to popular titles such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart 8, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Rurouni Kenshin, and with the Nintendo Special Big Band. On the Classical Trumpet side, Eric has appeared with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, All Japan Wind Orchestra, and Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, among others. Eric is a Yamaha Performing Artist and Clinician, having designed the Yamaha YTR-8340EM Miyashiro Custom Model Bb Trumpet.
